Kala was born and raised in Beavercreek, Ohio. She is a graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Bachelors Degree in Social Work and a Masters Degree in Social Work.  She currently holds a Certified Social Work License in the state of Kentucky.

Kala has worked in the field of social work since 2004 starting as a case manager for children and families with social and emotional diagnosis experiencing difficulties in several areas of their life. She has served as a therapist for children in a school-based setting as well as a therapist for children 7-18 years of age entering the foster care system. She worked as a child abuse and neglect case worker for Children Services in Dayton, Ohio and specialized in intake and ongoing case work with teenage children with delinquency charges. She transitioned to becoming an intake and ongoing case worker supervisor and supervised a team of 5-7 child abuse and neglect case workers. Upon her return to Kentucky in 2017, she started working at the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department as the HANDS Supervisor and Team Leader. She currently is the Manager of Infectious Disease and Preparedness at Lexington Fayette County Health Department. In this role she oversees the Epidemiology Team, Environmental Health Team, Disease Intervention Services Team, Preparedness Team and Vital Statistics Team.

When not working she enjoys spending time with her husband, her dog Ky and her family. She enjoys watching and attending UK sporting events and being outdoors.
